I am going to give a time line of what I have found out about the actions in Kent especially were I live in the southeast, Dover, Deal, Walmer and Sandown.
First Phase.
1642
Parliament take Dover Castle
Garrison of 24 men, A group of 11 daring men lead by a Mr Drake/Dawks, scale the sea facing cliffs to surprise and take the castle without a shot!
1643
Parliament send Richard Browne on expedition into Kent with 1,800 Troops and 2 Troops of Horse(more than lightly Dragoons as this was his orange regiment). Some gentlemen of Kent joined, royalist forces 4,000. Coming from Sevenoaks, Rochester and Tonnridge.
It's seems for three reasons, iron communication with Europe and stemm Royalist actions.
2nd Phase.
1647
Kent revolt under the parliament suppression of Christmas traditions. Canterbury, Rochester, Sittingbourne, Faversham and Sandwich Roit. Parliament see there Naval forces guarding the Downs revolt and declare for the King.
1648
Parliamentarian Fairfax marches to sort Maidstone and sends Colonel Rich to recapture Dover Castle and the Downs (Walmer,Deal and Sandown).
21st May saw Naval revolt and Kent rose for the King. The coastal castles surrender to Royalists.
In August landing at St.Johns, Thanet. Sir John Boys brings a Royalist force of 1500 Dutch Mercenaries and English Gentry, near Sandown Castle he attacks Parliamentary forces of Husbands, Axtel and Livesay.
Sir Boys attempts to land at Walmer and take the castle though Parliament horse troop drive them away.(4 August).
"On 14 August a larger landing attempt was made, under Major General Gibson and Sir John Boys, they were sent from the ships with orders to attack Colonels Rich and Hewson in their trenches."
"On 23 August news was fired into Deal Castle on an arrow of Cromwell’s victory at Preston, most Royalist hope was lost and 2 days later Deal’s garrison surrendered, followed by Sandown on 5 September, this finally ended the Kentish rebellion."
